Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is an activist in the field of feminist media in addition to a public speaking Canadian. She founded Feminist Frequency an online platform that hosts videos and commentary analyzing depictions of women's roles in popular cultural. Anita Sarkeesian has been a journalist, critic, and award-winning feminist over a decade. Feminist Frequency, a website to educate about gender roles within pop culture, is managed by Sarkeesian. She's committed to removing stereotypes of women as they are portrayed in popular media. Furthermore, she is working to increase awareness about internet-based harassment targeting women, as well as other marginalized groups of people. The holder of a master's degree in political and social thought from York University Sarkeesian is also a much sought-after public talker. She has also delivered speeches at TEDxWomen XOXO Festival as well as at the United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. She was a fan of feminist issues, gender and gender equality since the age of a child. As of 2009, as she was still at university, Sarkeesian launched the site Feminist Frequency. An ambitious woman was planning to launch a web series which would explore how gender is represented within games. However, she found herself in the middle of a harassment online campaign. The attack did have been a hindrance, rather it only bolstered her determination as a feminist media critic. Her significant contributions in the field of feminist have been recognized by numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian is an award winning media critic and the director of Feminist Frequency an educational and non-profit organization focused on the representations of women in pop-culture narratives.
